How many gallons is my pool?
Measure in feet, pick the shape, and get the gallons, the number of tanker loads, and how long a garden hose would take.
Single depth (above-ground pools, hot tubs)? Put the same number in both, or leave deep end blank.
Pool volume questions
How do I find the average depth?
Add the shallow-end depth and the deep-end depth and divide by two. Measure to where the water line will be, not to the top of the wall. If the pool has a long shallow area and a short deep hopper, the true average is closer to the shallow depth.
Why 7.5, 5.9 and 6.7?
One cubic foot holds about 7.48 gallons, which rounds to 7.5 for rectangles. A circle covers about 78.5% of the square around it (7.48 × 0.785 ≈ 5.9), and these are the conventional pool-industry factors for round and oval pools.
How accurate is the result?
Close enough to estimate loads and price. Freeform shapes, benches, steps and sloped floors change the real volume, so treat it as an estimate. Your builder’s paperwork, if you have it, is more precise.
How many gallons is a typical pool?
Many backyard in-ground pools hold roughly 15,000 to 30,000 gallons. Above-ground pools commonly hold 5,000 to 20,000 gallons, and hot tubs 300 to 500.
